About Turnstone

Turnstone Care Navigation was founded by Layla Powell, a registered nurse who earned her Masters in Case Management at Samuel Merritt. With 15 years in case management and end of life care experience in the greater Bay Area, she has led the clinical team at Hospice of Santa Cruz County and is now seeking to bring that expertise to families in the area.

Across that work, Layla kept seeing the same thing: families who were capable and devoted, but lost. They didn’t know which questions to ask, which forms mattered, or who to call when something changed at 9 p.m. on a Friday. The care was out there. Finding a way through it was the hard part.

She started Turnstone to help families untangle the often confusing knot of choices that end of life care can present.

What we do differently

We don’t run your care. We help you steer it. Turnstone is independent, so we aren’t tied to any facility, agency, or referral fee. Our advice has one purpose: what’s right for your family.

We’re local. We live here and we know the providers, the waitlists, and the backroads between Watsonville and Boulder Creek. When we recommend someone, we know them.

We stay with you. Care needs change, and we don’t disappear after the first assessment. We’re the steady point of contact as things shift, whether that’s a hospital stay, a move, or a hard conversation among siblings.

Why "Turnstone"

The Black Turnstone is a small shorebird on our Pacific coast. It works the rocky edge where the tide comes and goes, turning over stones to find what’s underneath. That’s the job: going through the details so you don’t have to do it alone.
